New academic file service, AFS

2008-10-23: CIS has begun offering a new network file service called AFS (Andrew File System, named after Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon). During the 2008-2009 academic year, AFS will replace the academic file servers, including the Home Server, Courses Server, Faculty Server, Staff Server, and Griffin Exchange.

Faculty and students are now able to use AFS for their personal Home server storage. Over winter break, the remaining academic file servers (Courses, Faculty, Staff, and Griffin Exchange) will be moved to AFS. In the spring semester, CIS will automatically migrate any users who haven’t yet switched over to AFS. Thesising seniors, however, will have the option to keep their old Home server rather than moving to a new system for only one semester.

Note: Administrative offices that need to store and share sensitive or confidential college data, should NOT use AFS. ACS has other secure methods for sharing this type of data. Contact ACS (x7600) for more information.
