Computing & Information Services
Reed Bulletins
Much like a physical bulletin board, Reed's new Bulletins service helps the community share information widely. You can monitor Bulletins via the Web or get them in your email Inbox, whichever you prefer.
Bulletins are organized into separate topics. Some topics are open for anyone to post into (e.g. for-sale); others are one-way announcements (e.g. computing-news). You can browse Bulletin topics online and sign up to get copies of each posting to any topics that interest you.
How to Read Bulletins
Browsing Bulletin Topics
- To browse Bulletin topics visit http://bulletins.reed.edu. You may need to log in using your network username and password (the same login information you use for your email). You will find a list of available Bulletin topics.
- View the bulletin details page by clicking on the bulletin name. On this page you will see the topic description and recent postings, and can browse to the topic archives. You can also "subscribe" to the topic, so you will get an emailed copy of each new posting.
Reading Bulletins in your Inbox
- Log in to bulletins.reed.edu
- You can opt to receive bulletin postings as e-mail in your Inbox. To do this, subscribe to that bulletin. You can subscribe to as few or as many as you like, using one of the methods below.
- Click on the name of a bulletin to view its details page. Click the Subscribe link near the bottom of the page - you will receive a yellow-highlighted confirmation of your subscription.
- At bulletins.reed.edu, click the checkbox next to as many of your Available Bulletins as you like.
How to Post Bulletins
There are two different ways to post bulletins.
- First, log in to bulletins.reed.edu. Click on the name of the bulletin to go to its Details page. Choose the Post link at the bottom of the screen. You will be presented with a simple form to fill out. Once you click the Send Message button, your message will be posted to the bulletin.
- The second way to post the bulletin is to send an e-mail to the bulletin e-mail address. This address can be found on the Details page of each bulletin. Simply write an e-mail to this address (which will be in the form ‹bulletin-name›@lists.reed.edu) and it will be posted to the bulletin.
Note that usually you will have to post from a Reed email address for the posting to be accepted. To avoid spam, posts from non-Reed addresses are silently discarded. Also note that not all bulletins allow anyone to post. Depending on a bulletin's restrictions, postings may be held for moderation.
Bulletin Administration
If you're a bulletin moderator, you'll receive an email notification when posting arrives that requires moderation. To accept or block the moderated post, follow the steps below.
- Log in to bulletins.reed.edu.
- Click the name of the bulletin you would like to moderate to view its details page.
- Click the Moderation link.
- For each message held for moderation, you will be presented with a choice:
- Approve: Release the message so that it is posted to the bulletin.
- Reject: Deny the posting and send a note to the poster explaining why the post was rejected.
- Discard: Deny the posting and do not inform the poster.
- Defer: Do nothing - the message will stay where it is until you decide to perform one of the other three actions on it.
The Future of Bulletins
This Bulletins service is new as of Fall '06. The service currently only includes Bulletins sponsored by College departments, but in the future Bulletins may be created for other entities such as student groups.
