SUDDENLY: WHERE WE LIVE NOW, is an ongoing set of visual art exhibitions, a reader, and a series of public programs beginning this fall in Portland, Oregon.

SUDDENLY was born of urban planner Thomas Sieverts's astonishing observation that ''the shaping of the landscape where we live can no longer be achieved by the traditional resources of town planning, urban design, and architecture. New ways must be explored, which are as yet unclear."

SUDDENLY attempts to find these 'new ways' through contemporary art, literature, and the conversations they spark. It comprises a set of exhibitions, an annotated reader, and a series of public events that will take place at various locations across the world indefinitely into the future.

SUDDENLY seeks new descriptions that give the landscape where we live an independent identity in the imagination of its occupants. We propose new language to displace 'the city' and 'the countryside' as the subject of our hopes and our struggles—the subject of our politics.

The mission of the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery is to enhance the academic offerings of Reed College with a diverse range of scholarly exhibitions, lectures, and colloquia in its role as a teaching gallery.

The gallery was established by a generous 1988 gift from Sue and Edward Cooley and John and Betty Gray "in support of the teaching of art history at Reed College, as part of an interdisciplinary educational experience that strengthens the art history component of Reed's distinctive humanities program." Exhibitions are coordinated in collaboration with Reed faculty members and courses, with attention to the needs and interests of the larger Portland and Northwest arts communities. A schedule of three to four exhibitions during the academic year brings to Reed and the Portland community work that would not otherwise be seen in the region.
