About Cantores in Ecclesia
Through an arrangement with Bishop Paul E. Waldschmidt, Cantores in
Ecclesia became the choir in residence at St. Patrick's Church in
Portland, Oregon in June of 1985. The choir began under the
direction of Dean Applegate, who continues to direct the choir
today. The choir remained in residence at St. Patrick's through
October 19, 2002, when mandated changes in the liturgy caused them
to withdraw from their residency there. Their first sung Mass in
St. Patrick's was for the solemnity of Corpus Christi on the 9th of
June when they sang William Byrd's
Mass for Five Voices and
selections from Byrd's
Gradualia (1605). A distinctive
objective of Cantores in Ecclesia has been to provide Gregorian
chant and sacred polyphonic music for the Solemn Latin Mass, which
was established at St. Patrick's by Fr. Frank Knusel, administrator
of St. Patrick's at the time.
The principal service of Cantores in Ecclesia is the task of
combining music and prayer. Gregorian chant is a form of sung
prayer, and the music of the great masters of sacred polyphony,
such as Palestrina, Victoria, and Byrd, creates a prayerful
atmosphere when the music is sung in its original liturgical
context. Cantores in Ecclesia is dedicated to the preservation and
promotion of Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony in liturgical
context within the Latin Mass of the Catholic Church.
