Orientation 2010
Humanities 110 for Parents
Register now for Hum 110!
Register online by August 2 to participate in Humanities 110. We cannot guarantee spaces without pre-registration, and need to plan for the appropriate number of professors to lead the parent humanities conferences.
One of the best ways to understand what your son or daughter will be studying for the next few years is to try it yourself. Lena Lencek, professor of russian & humanities, will speak on Homer’s Odyssey as part of the convocation ceremony on Wednesday, August 25 at 4 p.m. The following morning, parents will gather in small groups with professors to discuss the reading material and lecture.
Much like your son or daughter, you will be expected to do specific reading in preparation for the lecture and conference. While reading the Odyssey can be a challenge, we encourage you to read the entire book so that you can participate fully in the conference, similar to what your student will be doing in the upcoming year. The classics department recommends the Robert Fagles translation, which is available in new and used versions at a 25-percent discount from the Reed College bookstore. Order online no later than August 9 to guarantee timely arrival.
